Task 3B - E-Book
Instructions
This task is simultaneous with Brand Corporate Identity Task 4: Brand Guideline. We are required to create an interactive e-book outlining the guidelines for our brand.
References/Sketches
I first looked at a few references from Pinterest, I made some initial layouts but unfortunately I lost the files to them :(
Format + Grid
The size for this task was given to be 1366x768px. I played around with an odd number grid and settled on one that I liked.
All of my images were found either on Pinterest or Instagram, and have been credited within the picture.
Interactivity
I didn't really think much of it but I decided on making it look like a file with tabs for easy navigation. I would have explored more, but my laptop unfortunately could barely handle it and my InDesign would crash every time I played with animations, so I chose to not use any.
I utilized mostly the rollover effects for my buttons. I made sure to create navigation buttons for each section so that everything could be navigated within the document without having to press next slide on the document viewer.
I used page bookmarks for my button actions.
These are the tabs that will bring you to the main page of each section.
These buttons appear when hovered, and will take you to the named page when clicked. It also shows the current page you're on.
These arrows are for navigating next and previous pages if there is no navigation button.
Unfortunately I found that the buttons for my e-book don't work in PDF... I spent hours fixing it but I just couldn't get it to work, however it does work on the published online file luckily.

REFLECTION
Experience
I would say this is one of the most stressful tasks, not because of how difficult it is but because it is the end of the year so many events are happening right now and honestly I almost (actually I did) crashed out while doing this. All of my feedback sessions for this task were with Ms Li Lian, so I don't have much input from Mr Hijjaz. Working with InDesign although it is made for a large number of pages/designs, it still crashes a lot if your laptop is not built for it. I guess you could say it is also the most stressful because I had to wait a minute after each thing I did for my InDesign file to load and save. I almost wanted to give up, and I was a bit sad that I could not add more animations by the deadline, but that is also my fault for managing my time poorly. Despite all of this, I still think my brand guidelines are okay, and they aren't the worst in the world. Definitely could be improved on in terms of my image placement and usage but I can't really say if that is my fault or not because every time I wanted to move and image I had to wait for it to register which really made me feel like I could care less at the moment......
Observation
Looking back on all the lecture materials, I realised I really could have digested the information better. There are a few things that I have overlooked. Working with InDesign also is not as simple as it seems, as it takes a lot of testing and patience throughout working on the project because when something isn't right when you test it after a lot of progress, it's hard to fix it and usually you would need to re do a lot of things. It makes sense for it to have longer loading times due to the amount of artwork you have in a single file, but I still did not expect to have that many problems with the performance within the software while working on this.
Findings
Mr Hijjaz explained how to use the interactive animation features in InDesign pretty clearly, but I did not really use the software to it's full potential. Even with simple buttons, the load was too heavy on my laptop. Other than that I think adding the interactivity features is pretty simple, until you export the PDF Interactive and nothing works... Ms. Li Lian said it was alright as long as the published online one is functioning. I'm not sure if I would do this again until I have a better laptop...
