REFLECTION
Experience
I'm kind of dreading writing this reflection because I have a love hate relationship with this module. I enjoyed the tasks, but at the same time they were so draining and it was very difficult for me to find the time for them. I think I spent the most all-nighters this semester... I think Mr Hijjaz is very helpful and I regret not making time to go to him for feedback as often. How ironic for me to be going through the exact thing I'm warning about in my book :p. I'm still proud of myself for completing this module, although not perfectly it is after all the process of learning and one of the hardships in life. Mr Hijjaz if you are reading this I am very sorry for my insanely late submissions... I dealt with a lot of burn out and exhaustion this semester, it was hard for me to do a lot of things. I had so many things going on during my personal, work and academic life it's a bit hard to recall anything else.
Observation
There is an insane amount of work that goes into creating a book. I found myself debating whether I should just give up and restart a lot of times. The lectures and class materials definitely helped with my understanding of creating books, from designing to publishing, I didn't expect to be printing out an actual book entirely made on my own. But I am grateful to have a module like this because now I have a piece of work that I love and would not have created if not for this module! The history is interesting, and it's interesting to see how different parts of the world invent similar things, in their own way. And to have it all come together to what we have now, it's crazy to think of how many published work there is in the world now.
Findings
Designing and publishing a book entirely on my own was a great and transformative experience. I gained a lot of technical skills in design and formatting and have a good proficiency in InDesign now. Planning the printing and budget of the book was a new experience for me as well, I didn't realise how expensive books were to produce! I think I was able to really find and refine my own voice in this module, and learned about how to produce work that is not only personal to me but appealing to other readers. This process overall pushed me to become more resilient, and has actually become a journey of personal growth for me (time management.....).
