Symbol = A mark, sign or word that indicates, signifies, or is understood as representing an idea, object, or relationship.

Week 2

Branding originally derives from a the Old Norse word brandr, referring to the practice of branding livestock. This term has since evolved from farmers claiming their property, to artisans claiming credit for their work, to factories claiming their products, to companies claiming their products were better than others.

Brand = A person's gut feeling about a product, service or company. A mental construct shared by society about a product, service, organisation or even a person.

Brand identity = The collection of all elements that a company creates to portray the right image to its consumer.

A designers role in branding is to give form to the content, strategy and messaging. This means research research of the client's product, target market, etc. and the development of a trademark.

Design programmes are designed to ensure a visual identity is coherent and cohesive in its application across products and services of the organisation or person, maintaining consistency.

The Virtuous Cycle:

TASK 1 - Breaking Brand

Instructions

For this task, we are to do research on a brand and create slides presenting all of our found research based on the outline provided.

Research

Our group chose to do research on the brand Apple, unfortunately our group misunderstood the assignment instructions and thought that we only had to do one profile. Thus, our research only comprises of the expanded brand profile.

Slides

I was still confused on what was the actual instructions, as when I asked my groupmate if we had to do both and they responded with just one. Just to be safe, I did both but my mistake was not inserting my extra research into the research document.

REFLECTION

Experience

We did not have tutorials for this task as it is pretty straightforward, but I'm grateful to have the majority of my group members do relevant research and finished tasks on time so that we could all progress and complete our assignment smoothly. My only regret was that we didn't seek for proper clarification on the assignment instructions.

Observation

There is a lot of information about Apple's brand that can be found online, but it was a matter of finding the ones that were the most relevant and accurate as some information can be inaccurate. We were encouraged to create our own slides and I am not the best at creating slides so I think mine is quite simple. I realise that although we are design students, we still rely a lot on apps like Canva to create presentations so it was a bit of a learning curve to create presentable slides.

Findings

Apple is a very successful and established brand, and they have one of the most unique branding strategies, which is probably they are as successful as they are now. I gained a good understanding on what is considered when creating a brand, and how crucial it is to build and form a society's opinion.
