REFLECTION
Experience
During this course, I discovered just how crucial typography is in various aspects of design, from organizing text to creating a brand's identity. Understanding typographic systems taught me that arranging type isn't just about placement but also about creating a visual hierarchy that enhances readability and aesthetics. When working on Task 2, I realized that curating the right typeface can effectively communicate a brand's values and personality. Creating a font from scratch highlighted the importance of understanding the finer details of letterforms and how they come together to form a cohesive typeface.
Observation
As I worked through the different tasks, I noticed how each typographic system has a distinct impact on how content is perceived and read. Grids offered structure and predictability, modular systems provided flexibility, and random systems, though chaotic, could be very engaging when used appropriately. In the Task 2, I saw how typography interacts with color, imagery, and layout, and how maintaining consistency across all materials helps build a strong brand image. While designing my font, I became aware of the challenges involved in ensuring consistency in stroke weight, proportion, and spacing across all characters.
Findings
Working on these tasks was both challenging and rewarding. Experimenting with typographic systems improved my ability to create balanced compositions and sharpened my attention to detail. The process of developing a logo and branding package was exciting, involving brainstorming, sketching, refining, and seeing how typography plays a crucial role in effective branding. Designing a font pushed me to explore my creativity and patience as I refined each character meticulously. Presenting the final font design was particularly gratifying, as it showcased the practical and aesthetic strengths of my work. This course has significantly deepened my appreciation for the art of typography and its essential role in graphic design and branding.
