LECTURES

Week 1 - Introduction to Digital Photography and Imaging

This week was just an introduction lecture to what we should expect for the following weeks as we did not yet have access to Creative Cloud. We are required to make a digital collage for our first exercise.

Week 2 - Introduction to Photoshop

Mr Martin taught us basic features and tools of Photoshop, such as the lasso tool, pen tool, marquee selections and the layer interface. We used the tools we learnt to create a digital collage.

Week 3 - Digital Imaging Exercise 01 (Hearst Mansion Breakdown) & Blending Modes

Today we worked on the images below to add the character Shazam to a picture of the Hearst Mansion.

I first used the quick selection tool to remove the background from the image of Shazam by applying a layer mask.

I then added the image to the background of the Hearst Mansion and resized and repositioned Shazam to fit.

I used the match colour tool to colour correct Shazam so that he fit more into the background.

I then added noise filter to match the quality to the background.

To add a shadow to Shazam, I used the brush tool on a new layer to draw out the shadow, and added the gaussian blur effect to it. I then went in with the eraser tool to clean it up and reduced the opacity.

I duplicated Shazam to create his reflection, I mirrored it and erased parts of it that wouldn't be seen and adjusted the hue and saturation to match the other reflections in the water.

Then, I added the ripple effect.

We continued to practice blending modes with the final image and a few others:

By creating a gradient map layer, we experimented with different blending modes. Screen made black elements transparent, multiply made white elements transparent and softlight made black elements darker, white elements brighter and gray elements transparent.

I added the steam to the image of the girl drinking coffee using screen blending mode.

Then I created a level adjustment layer to increase the contrast of the image.

Using the gradient tool, I made a radial gradient, lowered the opacity and applied screen blending mode to brighten the outer edges of the image.

I added the image of birds to the sea side using multiply blending mode.

I then created a level adjustment layer with a clipping mask to the bird layer to increase the contrast of the birds and it's background so that only the birds could be shown.

Then I made another gradient layer, and used multiply blending mode to create a vignette.

Next I used softlight blending mode to increase the contrast of the woman image by duplicating the image and applying softlight to that layer.

Then, I created a vignette with the same multiply gradient layer technique.

Week 4 - Digital Imaging Exercise 02 (Recolouring Breakdown)

Mr Martin taught us how to recolour with these images:

I first selected colours from the coloured image as reference when recolouring the B&W image. Using quick selection tool and layer masks, I masked and coloured the hair, skin, eyes, lips, teeth, earrings, clothes and background.
